Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to the questions we get asked most often: prescription renewals and transfers, vaccination, home care equipment rental, chronic disease follow-up and more.

Renewals, Transfers and Prescription Extensions

Can a pharmacist in Quebec now renew a prescription without a time limit?

As of December 9, 2026, a pharmacist can renew a prescription without the six-month limit that used to apply, based on their clinical judgment. The rollout is happening gradually from one pharmacy to the next, so check directly with Pharmacy Simona Marcus to find out if this service is already available for your medication.

How do I request a prescription renewal online at Pharmacy Simona Marcus?

You can request a renewal through the Telus Pharmaconnect app, available on the App Store and Google Play. Enter the activation code provided by the pharmacy, then select the prescription to renew directly from your phone, whether you’re in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Vaudreuil or Île-Perrot.

How do I get the activation code for the Pharmaconnect app?

The activation code isn’t generated automatically: you need to request it in person at Pharmacy Simona Marcus. Once you have it, you enter it only once in the Pharmaconnect app to link your file and activate online renewals.

Can I renew a prescription by phone without using the Pharmaconnect app?

Yes, simply call the pharmacy at 514 457-8599 to make your renewal request directly by phone. The Pharmaconnect app remains a convenient option for those who prefer to manage their requests online, but it isn’t required to renew a prescription.

How do I transfer my pharmacy file to Pharmacy Simona Marcus if I have an active prescription?

The transfer happens without any interruption to your treatment: the pharmacy contacts your previous pharmacy directly to retrieve your file and active prescriptions. Just provide your name, date of birth and the name of your previous pharmacy at the counter or by phone.

What should I do if I run out of medication and my doctor isn't available?

A pharmacist can temporarily extend your prescription, with some exceptions to be assessed by the pharmacist, to avoid an interruption in treatment, even without consulting your doctor. Come to the pharmacy with your medication container or the exact name of your treatment so the pharmacist can quickly assess the situation and help you out.

Vaccination

Which travel vaccines can the travel vaccination clinic administer before departure?

The travel vaccination clinic recommends and administers the vaccines suited to your destination, whether it’s the Dominican Republic, Cuba or elsewhere, taking your itinerary and health status into account. The pharmacist also reviews which routine boosters (tetanus, hepatitis) you may still need based on your vaccination record.

How far in advance of departure should I book a travel vaccine consultation?

Plan for a consultation 4 to 6 weeks before departure, ideally up to 8 weeks for a more complex trip. This lead time is needed because some vaccines require multiple doses or take 2 to 3 weeks to provide effective protection.

Is the flu vaccine offered at the pharmacy?

Yes, the vaccination centre at Pharmacy Simona Marcus offers the flu vaccine, as well as the shingles vaccine and others for seasonal illnesses. The service is offered on-site in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, with personalized follow-up from the pharmacist for patients who have questions about their immunization.

Is the shingles vaccine offered at the pharmacy?

Yes, the vaccination centre administers the shingles vaccine, in addition to the flu vaccine. The pharmacist can advise you on the best time to get it based on your age and health history.

From what age can a child be vaccinated at the pharmacy?

In Quebec, a pharmacist can prescribe and administer most vaccines starting at age 6. For the flu vaccine or travel preparation, the minimum age drops to 2, which allows young children to be vaccinated right on-site.

Can a pharmacist vaccinate a traveller without going through a doctor first?

Yes, a qualified pharmacist can assess your travel health needs and prescribe and administer most of the vaccines recommended for your destination, without a prior medical appointment. That’s exactly the role of the travel vaccination clinic at Pharmacy Simona Marcus.

Renting and Buying Home Care Equipment

What mobility equipment can I rent at the pharmacy (crutches, walker, wheelchair)?

Pharmacy Simona Marcus rents crutches, canes, walkers, transport chairs and wheelchairs for a confident return home after surgery, an injury or a temporary loss of mobility. Equipment is selected directly at the counter, subject to availability.

Is renting a walker or wheelchair covered by insurance?

It depends on your private or public insurance plan: many cover part or all of the rental cost upon presentation of a medical prescription and the pharmacy receipt. Always keep your receipt and confirm your exact coverage with your insurer before renting.

Is it better to rent or buy a wheelchair or walker?

For a recovery period of a few weeks, renting remains the most economical option and avoids storing equipment you won’t need afterward. If the loss of mobility is permanent or the period stretches over several months, buying often becomes more cost-effective in the long run.

For how long can I rent mobility equipment like a walker or a wheelchair?

The rental period adjusts to your needs, whether it’s a few days after surgery or several months during a longer recovery. Let the pharmacy know the expected duration when you rent so they can confirm the exact terms.

Can I rent a breast pump at the pharmacy?

Yes, Pharmacy Simona Marcus rents breast pumps to new mothers who want to try a model before buying one, or who only need one for a limited time. The rental is arranged directly at the counter, with no need to visit a specialty baby store.

Chronic Disease Follow-Up and ABPM

Can the pharmacist follow up on chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure?

Yes, Pharmacy Simona Marcus offers rigorous follow-up for diabetes and hypertension, with advice tailored to each situation. This personalized follow-up helps you better manage your medication day to day, without always having to book another appointment with a doctor.

Can the pharmacist follow up on cholesterol (dyslipidemia)?

Yes, Pharmacy Simona Marcus provides cholesterol follow-up as part of its chronic disease management. The pharmacist can adjust her advice based on your results and treatment, complementing the follow-up done by your doctor.

How can the pharmacist help manage asthma day to day?

The pharmacist checks that you’re using your inhalers correctly, adjusts her advice based on how often you have symptoms, and can step in quickly if you have a flare-up. This personalized follow-up is part of the chronic disease management offered at Pharmacy Simona Marcus.

How does an ABPM test (ambulatory blood pressure monitoring) work?

A small device connected to a cuff is fitted on your arm at the pharmacy, and you wear it for 24 hours while carrying on with your usual activities. The device measures your blood pressure automatically, and a blood pressure report is then sent directly to your doctor.

Do I need a prescription to rent an ABPM monitor?

Yes. Renting an ABPM monitor requires a prescription from your doctor or a nurse. The device is simply returned to the pharmacy after the 24-hour measurement period, for an accurate picture of your day-to-day blood pressure.

What's the difference between a store-bought blood pressure monitor and an ABPM test?

A blood pressure monitor sold in stores measures your pressure at the moment you use it, while an ABPM test records your pressure automatically over a full 24 hours during your normal activities. The ABPM test gives a more accurate picture, especially for detecting masked hypertension or white coat effect.

For which minor health issues can the pharmacist now prescribe medication without a doctor?

As of December 9, 2026, a pharmacist can prescribe medication for a common health issue or start preventive treatment, in addition to adjusting an existing prescription. The exact scope of services still varies from one pharmacy to another as this change rolls out gradually.

Can the pharmacist adjust the dosage of a medication already prescribed by my doctor?

Yes, a pharmacist can change the dosage or form of a medication, or substitute one medication for another in case of a side effect or interaction, without going back to your doctor. This power already exists ahead of the December 2026 regulatory changes, which will expand it further. Note that there are exceptions, so it’s best to check with your pharmacist.

Personalized Follow-Up and Customer Service

What does the personalized follow-up offered by the pharmacist involve?

Personalized follow-up means supporting each patient in the day-to-day management of their medication and health, with advice tailored to their situation rather than generic answers. This follow-up is offered alongside the prescribing and vaccination services available at the pharmacy.

Can I ask a question about my medication without an appointment?

Yes, you can come directly to the pharmacy or call 514 457-8599 to speak with the pharmacist about a question regarding your medication or a service. No appointment is needed for this type of quick consultation.

What are Pharmacy Simona Marcus's opening hours?

The pharmacy is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sunday. These extended weekday hours make it easy to stop by after work.
